Bobi Wine Escapes Signature Pandemic, Cleared For Wednesday Presidential Nomination

After several days of uncertainty and speculation, National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine has been officially cleared to appear on the nomination list for the upcoming elections.

Kyagulanyi, who had been battling signature pandemic and allegations of irregularities and insufficiency in the endorsement lists submitted  walked out of the Electoral Commission offices Monday afternoon holding the coveted document.

Kyagulanyi says the claims about NUP not submitting enough signatures was intended to push his nomination date claiming that EC did not want him to be nominated on the same day as President Museveni.

“Well, they just gave us our certificate confirming that we have submitted the signatures but pushed our nomination from Tuesday 23rd to Wednesday 24th September at 2:00pm! This is despite the fact that we had written to them booking Tuesday, 10:00am! Pushing it to 2:00pm is clearly intended to frustrate our plans to have two rallies because the first one was meant to begin at midday”. Kyagulanyi says.

Political observers say Bobi Wine’s clearance not only cements his place in the contest but also energizes his support base ahead of the campaign trail and removes the last cloud of doubt and positions him as the rallying point for the opposition.

With the nomination certificate now secured, Bobi Wine is set to officially launch his campaign on Wednesday at Katwe Grounds and Kaala Playground (Nateete) for both dates promising what he called “a people’s Protest Vote through the ballot box.

Meanwhile ruling NRM party flagbearer and candidate Yoweri Museveni will be nominated first tomorrow Tuesday and will later launch his campaign at Kololo airstrip.
