China Donates $10 Million in Military Aid to Uganda, Strengthening Bilateral Defense Ties

Kampala, Uganda – July 4, 2025 — The People’s Republic of China has donated military aid and equipment worth $10 million (approximately UGX 36 billion) to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), marking a significant boost to the ongoing defense cooperation between the two nations.

The announcement was made by Col Chris Magezi the military assistant to the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who hailed the donation as a testament to the growing strategic partnership between Uganda and China.

According to UPDF officials, the aid package includes a range of non-lethal military equipment, logistics support, and training tools aimed at enhancing the operational readiness of Ugandan forces.

“This generous support from our Chinese counterparts reflects the enduring friendship and deepening military ties between Uganda and the People’s Republic of China,” Col Magezi stated. “It is a continuation of China’s longstanding commitment to capacity-building in the UPDF and regional stability in Africa.”

Military Cooperation

This is not the first time China has extended military support to Uganda. Over the past two decades, Beijing has consistently provided both material and technical assistance to the UPDF, including the donation of military vehicles, communication systems, and engineering equipment.

In 2011, China provided armored personnel carriers and patrol vehicles as part of a broader effort to assist Uganda in peacekeeping missions, particularly in Somalia under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). In 2014, China also trained Ugandan officers in military engineering, cyber defense, and aviation.

Beyond material aid, China has played an instrumental role in the professional development of UPDF officers. Dozens of Ugandan military personnel have received training and education in Chinese military academies, covering areas such as strategic planning, logistics, and counterterrorism.

Deepening Strategic Partnership

The military relationship is just one dimension of the broader Uganda-China partnership, which spans infrastructure development, trade, and cultural exchange. However, the defense aspect has gained prominence in recent years, especially as both countries express a shared interest in regional peace, counterterrorism, and maritime security.

Defense analysts see this latest donation as part of China’s growing footprint in African security affairs. Beijing has established itself as a major defense partner on the continent, with military aid, training, and arms deals with several African nations, including Uganda, Ethiopia, and Tanzania.

For Uganda, the relationship provides access to affordable military technology and a powerful diplomatic ally on global security platforms. Uganda has, in turn, supported China’s positions on international matters, including the One-China policy.

As Uganda continues to modernize its defense capabilities, officials say partnerships like the one with China will remain vital. The UPDF is currently involved in regional peacekeeping missions, anti-terror operations, and border security initiatives that require sustained logistical and technical support.

The $10 million donation comes at a time when Uganda is repositioning its military doctrine to focus more on technology-driven warfare, surveillance, and rapid deployment capabilities — areas where China has offered to provide more assistance.

“China remains a reliable partner in our defense transformation agenda,” the UPDF representative added. “We look forward to more joint training exercises, knowledge exchange, and collaborative peace efforts in Africa and beyond.”
