Did Kayihura Know? Agasirwe’s Murder Charge Sparks Old Ghosts

KAMPALA, June 17, 2025 –The  security underbelly of Uganda is rumbling once again and this time, it’s shaking dangerously close to the once-untouchable former Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura.

SSP Nixon Agasirwe his long time loyalist and feared ex-commandant of the Special operations Unit  has been remanded over the cold-blooded assassination of senior prosecutor Joan Kagezi.

The shocking development, nearly a decade after the 2015 killing, has sent shockwaves through security and political circles, with whispers growing louder: Who’s next?

Nixon in Chains, Kayihura in Fear ?

In the dusty chambers of Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court, Agasirwe stood stoic, flanked by prison guards, as murder charges were read out. What he is yet to say may be more dangerous than what he did.

His silence speaks volumes  and it’s making some very powerful men and women uncomfortable.

“General Kayihura must be sleeping with one eye open,” a former security source told us. “Nixon didn’t act on his own. If he talks, this won’t end with him. Agasirwe may have acted under orders  or with the silent blessing of the police’s top brass at the time”.

Shs 500K That Could Bring Down Giants

According to explosive testimony from convicted killer Daniel Kisekka, it was Agasirwe who allegedly handed the hit squad a mere Shs 500,000 to assassinate Kagezi a woman known for prosecuting high-stakes terrorism cases.

That single confession has now added murder to Agasirwe’s already notorious rap sheet, which includes illegal arms possession, torture allegations, and covert repatriation of Rwandan refugees. All while serving under none other than General Kayihura.

Familiar Circle of Accused Men

Agasirwe was part of a closely-knit elite police clique under Kayihura, whose members  from Col Ndahura Atwooki to Joel Aguma have all tasted courtrooms and prison cells since the regime collapsed.

“Nixon kept the secrets. Now, under pressure, wounded and betrayed, he will take others down with him”

Why Joan Kagezi

Kagezi’s assassination was a national tragedy. Shot dead in her car while her children watched in horror, her murder remains one of Uganda’s darkest stains. The case stagnated for years  until now.

With Agasirwe’s arrest, the lid may finally be coming off the pot. But as the prosecution follows the money trail, one question looms large: Was Agasirwe the mastermind or just a middleman.

Shadows of a Fallen General

While Gen. Kale Kayihura has kept a low profile since his release on bail in 2022 and retreated to his private farm in Katebe, Lyantonde district, his past is never far behind. Once lauded by President Museveni for “professionalizing” the police, Kayihura’s empire was later accused of state-sponsored kidnappings, illegal detentions, and creating a militarized police force that operated like an intelligence agency.

Now, with Agasirwe back in the dock and linked to an assassination, the walls may finally be closing in.

“This is the beginning of the end. If Nixon talks, it’s not just careers that will be destroyed. It’s legacies.”

Agasirwe’s next court date is July 8. Between now and then, investigators are expected to pore over years of internal police activity, re-interview old suspects, and possibly issue more arrest warrants.

If deeper links to high-ranking officials emerge, Uganda could witness one of its biggest security trials in decades.

And as for Kayihura, Well , let’s just say it’s not a time for deep sleep.
