Gombe Abduction: NUP Links Arrest of Supporter to Political Crackdown

Gombe, Uganda – Tensions flared on Monday night following the reported abduction of Noah Mutwe, a staunch supporter of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

According to accounts shared by NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine, unidentified armed men stormed Gombe village in a numberless double-cabin pickup truck.

Kyagulanyi added that they allegedly apprehended Mutwe’s uncle, handcuffed him, and forced him to guide them to Mutwe’s home, where the young man was seized and taken away to an unknown destination.

“They came like thugs, travelling in a numberless double-cabin vehicle. They first picked Noah Mutwe’s uncle and put him on handcuffs before ordering him to take them to comrade Noah Mutwe ‘s home in Gombe. They violently abducted him and took him away. His whereabouts are not known. They’re committing all these crimes against our people to instill fear in us and the entire population. But they’re giving us more reason to fight for a better country,” Kyagulanyi wrote on social media platform X.

The abduction comes on the heels of the recent detention and reported torture of Eddie Mutwe, Kyagulanyi’s close aide and head of security.

Eddie was allegedly picked up by security operatives in Mukono and later found abandoned in Masaka after days of incommunicado detention, during which he reportedly suffered severe abuse.

The opposition party says these incidents form part of a broader crackdown on political dissent, ahead of a tense electoral season.

Kyagulanyi has condemned the apparent resurgence of illegal detentions, arguing that they are designed to weaken opposition structures and silence activism.

“Every abduction only strengthens our resolve,” he stated. “We are not going to be intimidated into silence.”

The Uganda Police Force had not issued any public comment by press time.
