Kampala, Uganda — The Ministry of Works and Transport has, in conjunction with the Directorate of Traffic Police, suspended all YY Coaches bus operations for 15 days.
This follows a spate of serious road accidents attributed to reckless driving and suspected systemic failures within the company.
The temporary suspension, which took effect on Monday, was confirmed by the State Minister for Transport, Hon. Fred Byamukama, who said the move is part of a broader effort to restore sanity on Uganda’s highways and hold transport operators accountable for passenger safety.
“The Ministry of Works and Transport, in coordination with Uganda Police’s Directorate of Traffic, has resolved to suspend YY Bus operations for 15 days following a series of serious accidents linked to reckless driving,” he announced via socials.

According to the Ministry, the 15 days will be used to conduct a comprehensive audit of YY Coaches’ operations. This will include:
Verifying the validity and category of driver permits and badges
Reviewing driver work schedules to assess compliance with rest regulations
Investigating the company’s recruitment and training processes, with specific attention to allegations that some drivers are aged or potentially underqualified
“We want to ensure that the lives of Ugandans are not put in the hands of fatigued or undertrained drivers. We will not compromise on road safety,” Hon. Byamukama added.
The Uganda Police has also been directed to work closely with the Transport Licensing Board and the National Road Safety Council during the review period.

The development comes in the wake of a tragic road accident last week, involving a YY bus registration number UAV 701C, which overturned and caught fire near Makindu Trading Centre along the Kisoga–Nyenga Road in Buikwe District, en route to Kampala from Mbale.
This incident adds to a worrying trend of road carnage involving long-distance passenger buses, many of which operate under intense pressure to meet tight schedules and maximize daily trips.
Minister Byamukama maintained that the suspension may be lifted earlier or extended further depending on the outcome of the investigations. YY Coaches has not yet issued an official statement in response to the decision.
The incident adds to the rising toll of accidents that occur on Ugandan roads daily.
