A swift police response in the early hours of Friday morning foiled a violent robbery attempt in Mirimo Zone, Ndejje Division, Wakiso District, averting what could have been a tragic incident.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, the drama unfolded at around 2:20 a.m. when police received a distress call from residents of Bongole Village, Ndejje Parish, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality. A group of about ten men, armed with pangas, had reportedly surrounded and attempted to break into a local bar.

Upon receiving the alert, officers from Ndejje Police Station rushed to the scene. Their rapid intervention disrupted the attack, forcing the robbers to scatter.

In the process, one suspect, identified as Mpiima Muhamed, was arrested on the spot. Another suspect, only identified by his alias “Gravity”, was fatally shot after he allegedly attempted to attack one of the responding officers with a panga.

His body was transported to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem as investigations continue.

Police also recovered one panga from the scene, which has been retained as part of the evidence.

The remaining suspects are still at large, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend them.

“The vigilance of the community and the prompt response by our officers played a key role in stopping this robbery,” said SSP Onyango. “We encourage the public to remain alert and continue working closely with law enforcement to keep our neighborhoods safe.”

The incident serves as a reminder of the growing role of community policing in crime prevention, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas.

Police have assured residents of continued patrols and urged anyone with information about the suspects to come forward.

Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full details of the attempted robbery, including any connections to previous incidents in the area.
