Former Speaker of Parliament and current Minister for East African Affairs, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, has vowed to decisively defeat her long-time rival, Speaker Anita Among, in the contest for NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda.
Speaking at a public event in Kamuli, Kadaga launched a scathing attack on Among, accusing her of arrogance and interference in Busoga development projects. The minister did not hold back, even mocking Among’s appearance by calling her “owekizigo,” a local term referring to someone who bleaches their skin.
Kadaga expressed outrage over what she described as an attempt by Speaker Among to hijack a government agricultural project she personally lobbied for. According to Kadaga, three years ago she secured a promise from Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze for the delivery of 11 tractors to boost mechanised farming in Busoga, with each county set to receive one. The plan, she emphasized, was for the tractors to be distributed through traditional kingdom leadership structures.
However, Kadaga said she was shocked to learn that Among intended to preside over the handover ceremony.
“One day, while preparing for the handover, I was told that the bleaching lady wanted to come and hand over my tractors,” Kadaga said. “I thought—what arrogance! I’m the one who fought for this. Now you want to show up with your cosmetics and take credit for my work?”
She added that she called Minister Tumwebaze to stop the handover but says the tractors have yet to be officially delivered through the intended channels.
The feud between Kadaga and Among has simmered for years, but tensions intensified when Among declared her interest in replacing Kadaga as the NRM’s Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda. Kadaga’s latest remarks indicate she is ready for a bruising political showdown.
