Millions Exchange Hands in NRM Western Youth MP Race As Kankwanzi Bankrolled by FDC Stalwart’s Son Wets Beaks of Opponents’ Supporters

Recently, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) delegates’ conference turned into a dramatic showdown, marred by allegations of massive cash inducements, external infiltration, and high-stakes political maneuvering.

At the center of the storm is Mwine Tumwebaze, son of prominent Mbarara businessman Tycoon Kirimi, a known Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) financier. Mwine is accused of bankrolling a lavish cash handout spree, with delegates reportedly pocketing at least Shs 1.5 million each in exchange for their support.

His money-fueled campaign has thrown him into direct contest with Kakwanzi Elizabeth, who is believed to be enjoying strong backing from President Museveni’s younger brother and businessman, Toyota Museveni.

What was expected to be a routine contest for the Western Youth Member of Parliament seat has instead morphed into a bruising proxy battle, exposing deep fissures in the ruling party.

The controversy thickened with the involvement of Habibu Sseruwagi, a current member of the Equal Opportunities Commission and former State House operative.

Eyewitnesses claimed Sseruwagi was spotted guiding security officers on which delegates could access the main grounds, while also allegedly dangling promises of future government appointments such as Deputy RDC and Assistant RDC posts for those willing to rally behind Mwine.

Delegates described the conference atmosphere as chaotic, with loyalty being openly auctioned off and accusations flying over who was backing whom.

Analysts say the heavy deployment of cash and patronage is a worrying trend that risks eroding NRM’s internal credibility ahead of the 2026 general elections.

As the dust settles, the Western Youth MP race has become a litmus test for the party’s ability to police its own ranks.

Whether NRM leadership will step in to restore order remains uncertain, but the events of the weekend have once again highlighted how money and influence continue to shape Uganda’s political contests.
