Kampala, Uganda – The Principal Road Safety Officer at the Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT), Mr Amanyire Ronald, is embroiled in a financial scandal after allegedly falling prey to a fraudulent scheme that cost him over UGX 40 million.
Popularly known by some of his colleagues as “Muzungu Mworo,” Mr Amanyire is said to have been conned in a deal gone sour, prompting him to seek financial assistance from private money lenders in the city.
However, the mounting pressure to repay the debt has reportedly placed him in a precarious financial situation, with threats of legal action looming.
Multiple sources within the ministry, who preferred anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, revealed that Mr Amanyire has recently been frequenting informal lending circles in an effort to stabilise his finances, but has struggled to meet repayment deadlines.
The incident has raised more questions about the financial management of public officers and the growing dependence on informal credit services, which are largely unregulated and often charge exorbitant interest rates.
Efforts to reach Mr Amanyire for a comment were futile, as calls to his known mobile number were off by press time.
Observers have called on the Inspectorate of Government and other relevant authorities to investigate the matter and assess whether there was any abuse of office or conflict of interest involved.
This is a developing story.
