The National Coordinator of the Democratic Alliance, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, has accused National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, of orchestrating a campaign to tarnish his reputation.
Speaking during a televised interview on a Kampala-based station today, Rt. Hon. Mpuuga—who previously served as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament—claimed that Kyagulanyi had mobilized individuals for an entire month with the sole purpose of discrediting him in his home constituency of Nyendo-Mukungwe Municipality.
According to Mpuuga, these efforts were not spontaneous but rather a well-coordinated strategy meant to damage his political standing. He questioned why the same energy was not channeled toward organizing protests against the Electoral Commission, particularly given NUP’s long-standing grievances over electoral transparency and fairness.
Despite what he describes as continued provocation, Mpuuga said he has deliberately refrained from engaging in public spats or responding to personal attacks. However, he criticized NUP’s leadership, alleging that the party had taken the unusual step of individually reaching out to Members of Parliament to paint him in a negative light.
Mpuuga’s remarks come amid growing tensions between him and his former party, NUP, following his departure and subsequent alignment with the Democratic Alliance. His statements suggest that the rift between him and Kyagulanyi is deepening, raising questions about the broader implications for Uganda’s opposition politics.
The National Unity Platform has yet to officially respond to Mpuuga’s allegations. However, political analysts believe that these ongoing disputes within the opposition could impact its ability to present a united front ahead of future elections.
