Muhoozi Backs Down on Gen Sejusa Summons, Now Seeks Peace Talks and Reconciliation Over “Muhoozi Project” Fallout

KAMPALA — In a stunning reversal of a long-standing standoff, First Son and Chief of Defence Forces UPDF , Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has declared that he has forgiven former Coordinator of Intelligence Services, Gen David Sejusa, over the controversial “Muhoozi Project” dossier that once rocked Ugand’s political and security establishment.

The statement, made through Gen Muhoozi’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, signals a rare and unexpected gesture of reconciliation after more than a decade of simmering tensions between the two senior army officers.

“I have made peace in my heart with General Tinyefuza. After all the injury he heaped on me for many years, I forgive him. I will meet him, under the supervision of the Commander-in-Chief in exactly 2 weeks,” Gen Muhoozi posted.

The tweet comes as a major turnaround from earlier years when the First Son was reportedly pushing for Gen Sejusa formerly known as Tinyefuza to be summoned and held accountable for his explosive 2013 intelligence brief that warned of a clandestine plan to groom Muhoozi as President Museveni’s successor.

The leaked report widely dubbed the “Muhoozi Project” accused top government and military officials of orchestrating a dynastic succession plan, prompting a national debate and causing serious cracks within the top echelons of Uganda’s security apparatus.

The fallout forced Gen Sejusa into exile in London where he spent nearly two years in self-imposed isolation before returning in 2015 under unclear circumstances.

At the time, many expected a direct confrontation between the two generals, with reports suggesting that Muhoozi, then Commander of Special Forces wanted Sejusa investigated for insubordination and possible treason. But no such action was formally taken.

Sejusa was later retired from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in 2022 after a long, drawn-out legal and military standoff.

Now, Gen Muhoozi’s statement appears to draw a line under years of personal and political animosity. It also comes at a time when the First Son is increasingly seen as preparing for a future leadership role with his MK Movement gaining political traction and his public engagements becoming more frequent and deliberate.

The mention of an upcoming meeting “under the supervision of the Commander-in-Chief”  President Yoweri Museveni further suggests that the reconciliation is not merely personal, but officially sanctioned at the highest level of government.

Political analysts say the move may serve multiple purposes; to neutralize lingering dissent within the old guard, rally historical figures behind Muhoozi’s rising political profile and project a message of unity and maturity.

“This is both symbolic and strategic. It sends a powerful message that Muhoozi is willing to forgive even his harshest critics in the interest of national cohesion,” one military observer noted.

Gen Sejusa, known for his vocal critiques of the ruling system, has remained largely silent in recent years and it is unclear whether he will respond publicly or attend the anticipated meeting.

However, should the two generals shake hands under President Museveni’s watch, it would mark one of the most significant reconciliations in Uganda’s recent political history  potentially altering the dynamics within both the military and the ruling National Resistance Movement.

As Uganda watches closely, the meeting could become a defining moment in the transition from old rivalries to new alliances.
