Bunamwaya – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has praised the late Joseph Tamale Mirundi for his unwavering commitment to promoting the ideals of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and using the media to amplify its message.

Mirundi, a prominent political analyst, author, and former Presidential Press Secretary, died on August 13, 2024.

“The NRM lost a good cadre and a strategic communicator. I urge his children and grandchildren to carry on his good works,” President Museveni said in a message delivered by his Special Presidential Assistant on Press and Mobilization, and Deputy Spokesperson, Haji Faruk Kirunda, during a memorial mass at St. Gyaviira Catholic Parish, Bunamwaya.

The event marked one year since Mirundi’s passing and drew family members, political figures, friends, and former colleagues. President Museveni thanked the family for keeping Mirundi’s memory alive and commended the Church for leading the service.

“By the time he died, the late Tamale had become a household name, celebrated for his outspoken nature, especially on radio and television talk shows,” the President’s message noted.

Haji Kirunda encouraged the late’s children to remain united and establish a SACCO to enable government support. He also launched the construction of the Mirundi Media Plaza, estimated to cost Shs 1 billion, pledging 300 bags of cement on behalf of his family and assuring them of President Museveni’s backing.

President Museveni personally contributed Shs 30 million towards the memorial event.

Political commentator and close friend Frank Gashumba described Mirundi as a principled man, despite occasional disagreements, and pledged 100 bags of cement towards the Media Plaza project.

John Ssali Mirundi, the late’s elder brother, thanked President Museveni for his support during Mirundi’s illness and after his death, noting that the family had also reconciled with the Buganda Kingdom.

On behalf of the children, Ms. Teddy Nantongo expressed gratitude to the President for giving her father an opportunity to serve in State House and unveiled the grand plan to build the Media Plaza in Mpambire, along Masaka Road.

Fr. Francis Semuddu hailed Mirundi as a remarkable figure whose impact will be remembered for generations.
