Police Probe Mob Violence at Nyipir Primary Over Land Row

Uganda Police, together with sister security agencies in Nebbi District, are investigating circumstances surrounding a violent clash between Nyipir Primary School community comprising parents, teachers, and staff—and residents of the neighbouring Alenga Upper Village.

This news site has learnt that the conflict, which flared up on April 4, 2025, stems from a longstanding land dispute dating back several years.

According to West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Collins Asea, tensions reached a boiling point when a group from Alenga Upper reportedly armed with pangas, allegedly confronted and assaulted pupils who were burning dry grass on the school compound on April,3.

SP Asea further confirmed that a court ruling three years ago had upheld the school’s ownership of the disputed land, recognizing it as government property.

The crisis, reportedly led by Local Council 1 Chairperson Mungu Jakisa Robert of Alenga Village, culminated in the burning of 20 grass-thatched homes in Alenga Upper, Padolo Sub-County.

Later that night, around 11:00 p.m., tensions escalated when a mob allegedly set fire to the grass-thatched home of Mr. Oyungi Bonny, Chairperson of the School Management Committee. His residence lies approximately one kilometer from the school.

In apparent retaliation, members of the Nyipir community mostly parents launched a counterattack at 8:00 a.m. the following morning, setting fire to 19 more homes in Alenga Upper Village.
