Nairobi, Kenya| In a bold move signaling his presidential ambitions, Kenya’s former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially launched his new political party, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
The unveiling, which took place on Thursday, May 15, in Nairobi’s Lavington area, showcased a fresh political brand with distinct neon green, brown, and white colors, and the slogan “Skiza Wakenya”—Swahili for “Listen to Kenyans.”
The party’s logo is equally symbolic, depicting an ear being cupped by fingers, a clear nod to Gachagua’s promise to prioritize the voices of everyday citizens.
Gachagua will lead the party himself, with a powerful, albeit somewhat unexpected, lineup of political figures supporting him.
Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has been appointed interim Deputy Party Leader, while former Agriculture CS and Meru Senator Mithika Linturi will serve as the National Organising Secretary.
Also making a comeback to national politics is Cate Waruguru, who will lead the women’s wing, and Maina Kamanda, a former Starehe MP, who will chair the Council of Eminent Persons.
The party’s administrative core includes David Mingati as National Chairperson, backed by Peter Mwathi and Sarah Owino, who will manage strategy and operations.
Hezron Obanga will take on the role of Secretary General, with Martin Ole Kamwaro as his deputy.
Anna Mutua has been named National Treasurer, with Evangeline Njoka and Tomwas Nyangi as her assistants.
The economic affairs of the party will be spearheaded by Peter Mbae, formerly of the Presidential Delivery Unit, now serving as Secretary for Economic Planning. Youth leadership will be handled by politician Wanjiku Thiga.
Speaking during the launch, Gachagua emphasized his six-month-long engagement with grassroots leaders at his Wamunyoro residence, saying the DCP is a product of genuine public consultation and seeks to bring a “people-first” approach to governance.
The party will be governed through a structured framework, including several councils: the National Delegates Council, National Governance Council, National Executive Council, National Management Council, and the National Executive Board.
Additionally, Gachagua announced that DCP will establish specialized leadership councils covering key constituencies such as governors, senators, MPs, youth, diaspora, religious leaders, women, and students.
A larger public launch is scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, although the specific location has yet to be announced.
