Tanga Odoi Disqualifies Bosmic Otim Over Fake UNEB Papers

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has disqualified popular Gulu-based musician-turned-politician Bosmic Joyce Otim from the race for Bardege-Layibi MP flagbearer – citing fraudulent academic credentials.

The move was officially communicated in a stern letter dated June 30, 2025, signed by none other than Dr. Tanga Odoi, the famously sharp-tongued chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission.

The letter, which has since gone viral across Acholi sub-region WhatsApp forums and Facebook groups, revealed that Bosmic was erroneously nominated based on a falsified verification letter allegedly from the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).

“After proper scrutiny with substantial evidences,” the commission established that Bosmic’s documents were fake, rendering his campaign activities illegal.

Bosmic’s Rise and Crash

Bosmic Otim, the self-styled voice of post-war Northern Uganda, had ridden a populist wave since 2020. Once a darling of Bobi Wine’s People Power movement, he defected to the NRM in what he claimed was a survival tactic after alleged threats to his life. He returned from exile in 2024, promising to rally the Acholi youth behind President Museveni’s “steady progress.”

But his political career has been dogged by the same hurdle since day one: a lack of certified academic papers. In 2019, he sat for UACE exams in Gulu in an attempt to meet minimum requirements for elective office only to fall short. Critics at the time accused him of using his musical celebrity to dodge academic standards.

Now, with the NRM officially labeling his nomination “illegal,” Bosmic is once again in political limbo.

   War Cries and Political Boomerangs

Adding spice to the scandal is Bosmic’s history of public outbursts, particularly against his former comrades in the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Earlier this year, he dramatically declared “war” on Bobi Wine during a rally in Gulu City, accusing the NUP leader of using him and abandoning Acholi youth who died in the 2021 protests.

“Bobi Wine has no police, no army. I can handle him myself!” Bosmic raged from the podium, clad in yellow and flanked by NRM youth.

But political karma seems to have circled back. Today, he finds himself not only dumped by NUP but also rejected by the very party he swore loyalty to—and by a man whose own academic history casts a long shadow.

Tanga Odoi, ever the enforcer of party discipline, has long prided himself on “cleaning up” the NRM’s candidate lists. In the 2021 general elections, he famously disqualified dozens of would-be MPs, sparking both admiration and outrage within party ranks.

Otim’s dream of representing Bardege-Layibi on the NRM ticket is over at least for now.
