Residents of Mutithi in Kirinyaga County have been left stunned after daring thieves broke into ACK St. Matthew’s Mutithi Church, consuming sacred items and making away with church property.

According to church officials, the intruders helped themselves to altar wine and sacramental bread before stealing key items, including a musical keyboard used by the choir. The shocking discovery was first made by choir members, who noticed the missing equipment during their routine practice session.

Eliud Githaka, the church’s vice chairman, confirmed the incident and expressed disappointment over the lapse in security. “It’s disturbing that someone would violate such a sacred place,” he said.

Suspicion has fallen on the night guard assigned to the premises, with locals accusing him of negligence. “It appears the guard was fast asleep when the break-in happened. He didn’t notice a thing,” said a concerned resident.

Police officers visited the scene on Monday night and have since launched a formal investigation into the matter. They assured church members that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.

In response to the incident, the church leadership is now considering a change in security strategy. “We are planning to hire private security personnel going forward, as we can no longer trust the current arrangement,” a church official stated.

The break-in has sparked conversations among locals about the need for better security, especially in places of worship.
