Wangadya Takes on Gen. Muhoozi: Release Eddie Mutwe Now or Face Contempt

Kampala – The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has issued a dramatic Release Order demanding the immediate freedom of Edward Rogers Ssebuufu, popularly known as Eddie Mutwe, after nearly a week in military custody.

In a bold directive dated May 2, 2025, the UHRC declared that Mutwe’s detention by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) since April 26 was unlawful, warning top military brass that continued defiance could land them in hot water for contempt of the Constitution.

The explosive release order, signed by UHRC Chairperson Hon. Mariam Wangadya, was addressed to none other than the Chief of Defence Forces himself, raising eyebrows across Kampala and sparking fresh debate on military accountability and human rights abuses.

“This is to direct you to cause the immediate release of Edward Rogers Ssebuufu,” reads the order, citing Article 53(2)(a) of the Constitution and Rule 31 of the Commission’s Procedure Rules.

Mutwe, a well-known political activist and close ally of opposition figure Bobi Wine, was reportedly picked up in a secretive military operation. Since then, his whereabouts and condition had remained unclear, fueling public outrage and concern over enforced disappearances.
