A tense moment unfolded in Migori County on Sunday, May 4, when President William Ruto was forced to briefly halt his speech after a shoe was hurled at him by an unidentified individual in the crowd.
The bizarre incident, caught on video and now circulating widely online, shows the President instinctively blocking the airborne footwear with his arm. The projectile zipped past his security detail, nearly striking him in the head while he addressed a sea of residents from a raised platform.
Photos released earlier by the Presidential Communication Service had shown Ruto confidently addressing the crowd from a small dais, flanked by a thick ring of General Service Unit (GSU) officers. However, the elevated podium left a gap between the Head of State and his protective ring, giving the would-be shoe-thrower a direct line of sight.
Screenshots from the dramatic footage show the sequence: the shoe enters the frame, hurtles toward the President, makes contact, and is finally swatted away by a quick-reacting Ruto. One security officer lunged forward immediately as the commotion erupted.
The President, who was in Migori for a three-day development tour, had just started talking about lowering the cost of living when the chaos broke out. Eyewitnesses say the crowd had grown restless, with people inching closer to the podium and security visibly struggling to hold them back.
Despite the scare, Ruto resumed his speech after a short pause and continued with his itinerary, which included launching the 298-unit Kehancha Affordable Housing Project in Kuria West and attending a church service in Suna East.
The incident drew comparisons to the infamous 2008 episode when a furious Iraqi journalist hurled not one, but two shoes at then-U.S. President George W. Bush during a Baghdad press conference. Bush, who ducked both, later quipped about the shoe size.
As for Sunday’s Migori incident, questions are now being raised about the security setup and how the shoe managed to breach the presidential perimeter.
