Kenya’s Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has voluntarily stepped aside as investigations intensify into the controversial death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang, who died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.

Ojwang, known for his vocal online commentary on governance and human rights issues, was reportedly arrested on charges that remain unclear.
According to multiple eyewitness accounts and family statements, he was in good health at the time of his detention.

However, within hours of being held, Ojwang was pronounced dead, allegedly after sustaining severe injuries consistent with physical assault.

His death has triggered national outrage, with human rights groups, civil society organizations, and the public demanding accountability from the Kenya Police Service.

Protests have erupted in Nairobi and other parts of the country, with demonstrators decrying what they describe as a culture of impunity and police brutality. Social media campaigns under hashtags such as #JusticeForOjwang and #EndPoliceBrutality have trended nationwide, drawing attention from international observers and watchdogs.

In light of the growing pressure and to ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigations, DIG Eliud Lagat has temporarily stepped aside.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and other relevant agencies have pledged to conduct thorough inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death and any potential cover-up attempts within the police ranks.

The case has reignited calls for comprehensive police reforms in Kenya, with activists urging the government to take decisive action to end extrajudicial killings and restore public trust in law enforcement.
