SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA
Smith Kiiza, a Ugandan-born legal scholar and human rights advocate, marked a significant milestone this week as he graduated from the University of California, Davis School of Law with a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Business and Corporate Law, his second LL.M. and latest achievement in a remarkable global legal journey.
Known for his sharp intellect and unwavering commitment to justice, Mr. Kiiza has worked across more than 14 countries, including legal consultancies in seven African nations, five Asian jurisdictions, and two in the Americas.
His academic track record is equally distinguished. While enrolled at UC Davis, he continued his doctoral research on an interdisciplinary project examining “The Evolution, Ecology, and Conservation of Paleopteran Insects,” connecting environmental science with legal protections for biodiversity.

During his time at UC Davis, Kiiza also co-led a distinguished legal seminar titled “The U.S. Impeachment and Presidential Immunity: A Constitutional Perspective,” where he collaborated with international colleagues to explore constitutional frameworks from Uganda, China, Saudi Arabia, and Nepal.
“This degree is more than a credential—it is a commitment to global justice and responsible governance,” Kiiza said during a post-graduation address. “I am grateful to my family, professors, and attorneys who supported this journey. This success belongs to all of us.”
Special recognition was given to his U.S.-based attorneys, Bets Stephen and Veronica Barba, whose legal representation ensured Smith’s continued focus on education and professional growth amid the complex landscape of international student legal status.
“They’ve not only served as my legal team, but as advocates who understood my mission and walked with me every step of the way,” he added.

Supporters from across the world—ranging from law professors to local Ugandan community leaders—have hailed Kiiza’s achievement as “inspirational” and “transformational.”
UC Davis Law Professor Greenwood Beth stated, “Smith represents the best of international legal education: intellectual rigor, social vision, and global perspective.”
As Smith Kiiza prepares to transition into his next chapter—whether in academia, public policy, or global legal advocacy—his story continues to be a living testament to the power of resilience, purpose, and international cooperation.
